McDonald's has taken down a Christmas commercial created via generative AI after facing considerable criticism on social media.

The short film was developed using generative AI clips and was initially published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Social Media Reaction and Removal

Following its publication, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an important learning as we examine the effective use of generative technology," stated a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that might go awry during the Christmas break, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI Commercials

Adverts that feature generative AI have become a increasing trend among prominent companies, particularly for the holiday season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Because clips created using generative AI are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about the replacement of human roles in the production sector, with some critics stating it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "It was a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand reportedly received a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, several companies have also encountered criticism for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between new tools and creative integrity.
