James Comey court appearance
The former director has maintained his innocence regarding the charges

Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's attorney submitted the plea representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the case terminated for several causes including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was charged just days after the former president pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the court they aimed to submit various petitions to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the proceedings.

The former director's legal matter was first managed by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different rival - the New York official - failed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the former government terminated.

Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was fired about several months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the period, he was overseeing an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys claim the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not approved someone at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey posted to his Instagram after he was accused, he said he was innocent and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"We have understood for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a trial."

The charges against Mr Comey came after the former president shared on social media insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and others.
